How does it work? 

 

The arrester is grounded, allowing it to charge into positive electrodes, creating a potential difference. 

Lightning protection uses this potential difference to balance electrical charges of opposite polarity. Positive charges attract negative electrodes floating in the air. 

When balanced, the device absorbs opposite charges and drains this current to earth or surrounding water in harmless milliamps.

By stabilizing the electric field existing in its surroundings, it creates a protective shield that cancels the formation of upward tracers, thus eliminating the risk of lightning.
